01

Overview

Adobe Premiere's Generative Media Tool lets editors generate video and sound effects without leaving the sequence they are cutting.

The useful part is not just text-to-video. The tool is timeline-aware: you choose the exact region that needs media, can use reference frames from the project, select a supported model, and receive an editable clip that remains part of the normal Premiere workflow.

02

1. Select where the generated media should go

Open the project and choose the Generative Media Tool from the Tools panel. Drag across the timeline range where you want the generated clip or sound effect to appear.

Starting with the timeline range helps define the role of the generated asset before you prompt. For example, decide whether you need a two-second cutaway, a transition cover, environmental ambience or a specific effect.

03

2. Describe the media you need

Enter a text prompt in the generative task bar. Be specific about the job the clip needs to perform rather than only describing aesthetics.

For video, useful prompt information can include subject, action, environment, camera behavior, framing, lighting and visual continuity. For sound effects, describe the source, timing, intensity and texture.

Adobe also says voice input can guide the rhythm, timing and intensity of generated sound effects.

04

3. Choose an AI model

Use the Model menu to select a supported generation model. Adobe says the system includes Firefly and partner models such as Google Veo, Kling, Runway and Luma.

Do not assume every model is available to every account. The list can vary with plan, region, feature state and Adobe's integrations.

Choose based on the type of shot you need and the controls exposed for that model rather than assuming one model is always best.

05

4. Add reference frames when useful

For generated video, Premiere can sample frames from the sequence as visual references. This is particularly useful when the generated shot needs to fit beside existing footage.

A reference frame can guide visual context, but it does not guarantee exact character identity, geometry, lighting or continuity. Treat it as guidance and review every result in the cut.

06

5. Adjust model-specific settings

Adobe documents settings such as resolution, aspect ratio, frame rate, seed and duration, depending on the selected model. Open Advanced settings when the chosen model exposes additional controls.

Keep these settings aligned with the destination sequence. A generated clip that looks good in isolation can still be awkward if its frame rate, duration or composition conflicts with the surrounding edit.

07

6. Generate and review in context

Run the generation and inspect the result where it will actually appear in the edit. Check continuity, pacing, subject consistency, motion, artifacts, audio timing and whether the clip genuinely solves the editorial problem.

Because the result is added as an editable clip, you can trim, move, process or regenerate it rather than treating generation as a final export.

08

Practical creator workflows

Fill a missing b-roll gap

Mark the gap, use nearby frames as references when useful, prompt for the missing action or environment, generate several options, then cut the strongest result to the required duration.

Generate a custom sound effect

Select the exact moment, describe the effect and its timing, and use voice guidance if helpful. Review it against dialogue and music before committing.

Build an AI-assisted rough cut

Start with Paper Edit to create a dialogue-driven sequence, then use Generative Media only where the rough cut reveals genuine visual or audio gaps. This keeps generation subordinate to the edit rather than generating unnecessary assets first.

09

What about Generate Soundscape and Generate Music?

Adobe's broader Premiere AI workflow includes Generate Soundscape and Generate Music in beta. Soundscape can analyze up to 15 seconds of video and produce timed ambience/effects. Generate Music creates original instrumental background music with options such as tempo and looping.

These are related but distinct workflows, and beta status means details can change.

10

Credits and cost

Generative Media is not best understood as one fixed price per clip. Adobe plans include different generative-credit allowances, and partner models may consume credits differently. Check the generation cost shown by Adobe for the chosen model before committing to a high-volume workflow.

11

Common mistakes

Do not prompt before deciding the editorial purpose. Do not assume reference frames guarantee continuity. Do not build a workflow around a partner model without checking current availability. Do not ignore sequence settings. And do not treat generated results as automatically production-ready merely because they appear inside Premiere.

FAQ

Can Premiere generate video without leaving the app?

Yes. The Generative Media Tool generates video in a selected timeline range and returns editable media to the sequence.

Can I choose the AI model?

Adobe says the Model menu can include Firefly and supported partner models such as Veo, Kling, Runway and Luma.

Can Premiere generate sound effects from text?

Yes. Adobe documents text-prompted sound-effect generation and optional voice guidance for timing and intensity.

Are generated clips editable?

Yes. Adobe describes generated outputs as editable clips that can be refined in the sequence.

Does it use reference images?

For video, Premiere can use frames sampled from the sequence as visual references.
