Runway has opened a model-licensing path for enterprises that want more control than a normal generative-AI API provides. Instead of only sending requests to Runway-hosted models, qualified customers can license complete Runway model weights, fine-tune them on proprietary data, deploy them inside their own infrastructure and commercialize what they build.

What is Runway Model Licensing?
Runway Model Licensing is an enterprise offering for organizations that want direct access to Runway model weights. Runway's primary licensing page says the package can include complete model weights, checkpoints, a training script, delivery into the customer's codebase and hands-on support from the researchers who built the model.
The core idea is control. With API access, Runway operates the inference infrastructure and charges according to usage. With the licensing route, the customer can host the model in its own cloud, data center or on-premises environment and can fine-tune it using its own data.

Can Runway models be self-hosted?

Runway itself frames the choice as 'own it, or access it.' Runway Dev provides API access to Runway and third-party models with usage-based pricing and no infrastructure to operate. Model Licensing instead provides weights, customization rights, self-hosting and an annual commercial license.
Neither route is universally better. The API is simpler when a team wants to ship quickly and does not want to manage GPU infrastructure. Licensing becomes more interesting when proprietary fine-tuning, version control, private deployment, predictable high-volume economics or deeper model ownership matter enough to justify infrastructure and enterprise-contract complexity.

How much does Runway Model Licensing cost?

That means there is no verified universal annual fee, minimum contract value, GPU requirement or break-even usage level to quote. Any article or calculator claiming a standard public license price should be treated cautiously unless Runway publishes one.

Why this launch matters
Most frontier media-model companies monetize through hosted applications or APIs. Runway's licensing offer creates another route: enterprises can buy access to closed model weights and operate them inside their own environment while receiving direct help from the model maker.
